Sarafina!

Sarafina! is a South African musical conceived and originally directed by Mbongeni Ngema, who also wrote the book, music, and lyrics. Sarafina! premiered on Broadway on January 28, 1988, at the Cort Theatre. The production received Tony nominations for “Best Musical,” “Best Original Score,” “Best Choreography,” “Best Direction of a Musical,” and “Best Featured Actress in a Musical.” Set against a school uprising similar to the Soweto Riots, the story focuses on several young characters, including the schoolgirl activist Sarafina. Things get out of control when policemen shoot several students.
